Boa Vista bound
On 1st February I, Geert Strobbe will be
leaving for Boa Vista together with 27 students and volunteers to fulfil
traineeships, to do social work (in the school of Padre Paulo in
Barraca) and to do technical workshops (electricty) in the centro de
juventude di Sal Rei. The last students will stay until 16/6/2012 !
This is an initiative of the Belgian University College Lessius Mechelen
(14.000 students) and the NGO Boa Vista O Mundo Foundation (founded by
myself and students of Lessius); see website www.boavistaomundo-vzw.be
This project will be returning each academic year again. In Belgium
students are raising money to help some social project on the island;
last year we gave 13.000 €. I add some pictures : article in news paper,
presentation poster (Geert Strobbe, Padre Paulo and Johan Cloet,
general manager university college).

Return flights
A few expats managed to book a return flight from Sal to UK through the
TUI office in Santa Maria during February, when there were no seats
showing as available on the Thomson website.

Agriculture Minister seeks cooperation with Germany to cultivate jatropha 26 January 2012
Minister of Rural Development Eva Ortet is hoping to obtain support from
Germany in order to expand the cultivation of jatropha in Cape Verde.
Cooperation between the two countries in this domain is expected to
begin in the coming days, with the planting of more than 37,000 jatropha

“Plastic-free Cape Verde” initiative launched on Sal and in Praia 28 January 2012
The Plastic-Free Cape Verde campaign was launched simultaneously in
Praia and on Sal yesterday, January 27, by the Environmental Defense and
Development Association (ADAD). The project is tantamount to a
“declaration of war” against the plastic bags used everywhere in the
country and which ended up polluting the sea and getting caught in
trees, degrading the Cape Verdean landscape and producing toxic

Cape Verdean Armed Forces Chief of Staff Colonel Alberto Fernandes said
at the end of the Falcão 12 military exercise that the country’s Armed
Forces are prepared to combat any illicit acts that may come to occur in
Cape Verde. São Nicolau is expected to be the stage for next year’s
edition of the military exercise, which took place under the command of

Reforms in juvenile justice under analysis 30 January 2012
The Ministry of Justice and other stakeholders in the sector will meet
today, January 30, at the local United Nations Office Against Drugs and
Crime (UNODC) to discuss what the priority areas for reforms in the
juvenile justice system in Cape Verde should be. A report elaborated by
the UNODC on the request of the Cape Verdean government will serve as a

Cape Verde and US to sign second MCA compact on February 10 30 January 2012
Cape Verde and the United States will sign the accord for the second
Millennium Challenge Account financial compact on February 10. The
signing will take place in Praia and will be attended by a delegation
headed by the executive director of the Millennium Challenge

General Inspectorate of Labor renews statutes 30 January 2012
The General Inspectorate of Labor, which oversees and enforces the
application of legal provisions related to working conditions in the
country, has new statutes. The document was approved in last Thursday’s

Cidade Velha unveils sculpture allusive to settlement of Cape Verde 30 January 2012
On Tuesday, January 31, a monument commemorating the 550th anniversary
of the settlement of Cape Verde. The sculpture is the work of Maria da
Veiga and features the representation of a caravel, the cross, the local
municipal symbols and the inscription “On May 1, 1460, the navigators
António da Noli and Diogo Gomes arrived here, in the service of
